Summer is officially here! Which means, longer days, sun tans, flip-flops, top knots, and sparkly, fruity drinks. It’s rosé, margarita, and Moscow mule season! So how do we stay on track during the summer months and still enjoy ourselves?!
The key is to stay HYDRATED. Sounds familiar right?!
This DIYcleanse Community is really smart. We know that you know you’re supposed to drink water, but we also recognize that it’s very easy to get distracted from remembering to drink it and to veer off course every now and then because it’s rosé, margarita, and mojito season!
Phew…you’re off the hook . . . just a little bit!
Here are a few fierce facts to remind you how important is it to remember your water, 5 ways to sneak more water into your summer time fun, and 4 ways to upgrade your favorite cocktails to be “better-ish for you.” We’ve even included 2 of our “healthy-ish” cocktails for you too!
2 FUN Fierce Facts:
- Your lungs are 90% water; your brain is 76% water; your bones are 25% water—so, basically we’re made up of water!
- Some say when we’re only 1% dehydrated, our metabolism slows, which is responsible for converting food into energy and burning energy! That’s not good for our beach body.
Signs of dehydration—not the most radiant looks or feelings to rock your summer.
Shriveled, dry skin, and tight skin
Sunken eyes and fine lines around eyes
Dry mouth
Irritable
Headaches
Constipation
Minimal urine
Muscle Cramps
Feelings of dizziness
Bad breath
REMEMBER… When you finally realize you’re thirsty, you’ve been dehydrated for awhile.
To help you remember your water, here are 5 ways to stay healthy, hydrated and having fun this summer!
1.) Start your morning with H2O// Keep this AM ritual strong!
We add lemon to warm/room temperature water every morning in order to wake up our digestive organs and turn on our metabolism. The earlier we start drinking water the better we will be able to remember to keep drinking water throughout the day because we will feel it when we don’t. See signs of dehydration ^^^ above.
But just in case we are too busy playing outside, traveling, exploring, lounging around or catching up with friends and family, here’s is a gentle nudge to drink more water . . .
2.) Set a reminder in your phone or watch every few hours to drink some water.
Creating a reoccurring alarm with a catchy or motivational message on your phone every 1-2 hours revolutionized my water drinking habits. Every time it went off, I would look for my water bottle. We’re busy! We’re having fun! We know we’re supposed to drink water but the habit just slips away from us. So, give yourself a break and create a reminder just like you would an important social event. And then honor the reminder like you would an important doctor’s appointment. Your body needs water so it can sustain itself and create natural energy for you to keep enjoying yourself all summer.
3.) Pack fruits and veggies as snacks to bring poolside/beachside
Fruits and veggies are almost 70% water. Snacking on these will also help keep you hydrated and full because they’re high in fiber. Plus, they are loaded with minerals. And since minerals are required to adequately absorb all the water you’re drinking, eating these will significantly help your health and energy. On a side note, eating fruits will help with your sugar cravings so you won’t feel so tempted to over indulge on refined sweets and sugary drinks. Bonus!
4.) Set a reminder to take a sun break (with a green juice)
The sun, salt and chlorine is dehydrating. Every few hours, step out of the sun and check-in with how you are feeling. What are you craving? When was the last time you went to the bathroom? How does your head feel? Are you hydrated enough?
And then hit the refresh button with a hydrating and mineral infused green juice since veggies are full of water! You can bring your own and store it in a cooler or go find a place that sells them fresh. Even try adding some Himalayan Pink Salt to it to load up on essential trace minerals. Remember, water needs minerals to be properly absorbed. ^^^
5.) Throw a kombucha in your beach bag
Swap carbonated cocktails for Kombucha. Kombucha is a fermented, carbonated, probiotic drink that will quench your thirst, promote gut health and give you a carbonated kick. This drink will having you thinking you’re enjoying a fabulous cocktail. Sweet! We love kombucha because it can actually help to detox your liver (more in this in DIYcleanse phase 2 coming out very soon!!!) gives you energy AND can boost your immune system. Boom, the trifecta.
